Right. Before anyone in the comments gets elitist about playing ARK on a phone instead of a $2,000 gaming PC โ just hold on a second.
This is not a replacement for the PC version. Nobody is saying that. But here’s the thing people seem to forget: the phone in your pocket right now has roughly the same processing power as a gaming PC from not that long ago. What used to take up your entire desk is now sitting in your jeans. And honestly, if you’ve spent serious money on a Pro or Ultra flagship phone and you’re not gaming on it โ what exactly are you doing with it?
Let’s Talk About Mobile Games Honestly
Most phone games are rubbish. There, it’s been said.
The ones that are obviously designed to keep the lowest common denominator impressed get boring within minutes. A huge chunk of them are just elaborate micro-transaction delivery systems dressed up as games. And the ones that borrow from beloved PC titles? Usually disappointing at best โ related to the original IP by name only, stripped of everything that made it interesting.
This is not one of those games.
To be clear โ casual games and puzzle games are completely fine. No shade to anyone who loves them. This is specifically about the trend of PC games being ported to mobile in a state that makes you wonder why they bothered.
ARK: Survival Evolved Mobile bothered. And it delivered.
What We Love About It
This is the same game. Same world, same map, same storyline, same crafting system. The interface and controls are scaled-down versions of the PC experience rather than being awkwardly crammed onto a tiny screen or rebuilt from scratch into something unrecognisable.
The first-person experience translates well to touch controls โ genuinely well, not “well for a phone game” well. The dinosaurs are just as dangerous. The survival loop โ land on the beach, find yourself in your underwear, start punching trees, slowly build something resembling a life while things try to eat you โ is all there.
The micro-transactions are minimal and, crucially, they don’t interrupt gameplay. They’re there if you want them, invisible if you don’t. And the base game? Completely free. You can download it right now and play the full experience at no cost. Additional maps are available for purchase but at very modest prices.
What’s kept from the PC version:
- Full storyline โ
- Full crafting system โ
- Same world and map โ
- Taming mechanics โ
- Multiplayer and tribes โ
- Micro-transactions minimal and non-intrusive โ
- Base game free โ
What’s different:
- Some hotkeys that rely on a keyboard don’t translate to touch โ but the game works around this rather than ignoring it
- A small number of advanced features from the PC version aren’t present, but nothing that breaks the core experience
What We Hate About It
โฆhonestly? Not much. Going in with the right expectations โ this is a mobile game, an excellent one, not a PC replacement โ there’s very little to complain about.
The Verdict
โญโญโญโญโญ Five stars. With one important caveat: walk in knowing what it is. It’s not ARK: Survival Ascended on your phone. It’s ARK: Survival Evolved built thoughtfully for mobile, and on those terms it absolutely nails it.
In fact, if you’ve been on the fence about picking up ARK on PC, this is the perfect way to try before you buy.
