Every “essential accessories” list on the internet reads the same — mouse, case, headphones, done. Here’s a version based on what we actually see hold up (and fall apart) when students bring gear in for repair.

Worth Every Dollar

A proper protective sleeve. Not a decorative one — something with real padding. We see far too many laptops with cracked lids from being tossed into a backpack unprotected.

A USB-C hub, if your laptop is thin. Most slim laptops these days ship with two or three ports, tops. A decent hub solves the “I have a USB drive and nowhere to put it” problem permanently.

A cooling pad, if you run anything demanding. Video editing, coding environments, or just an ageing laptop running hot — a cooling pad genuinely extends the life of the internals. We’ve opened up enough laptops with heat-damaged components to take this one seriously.

Nice to Have, Not Essential

A wireless mouse and external keyboard are genuinely more comfortable for long study sessions, but they’re a comfort upgrade, not a requirement — plenty of students go years on a trackpad just fine.

A laptop stand helps posture if you’re at a desk for hours, less so if you’re mostly working from a lecture hall or couch.

Skip Unless You Have a Specific Need

Noise-cancelling headphones and webcam covers are genuinely useful for some students (noisy share houses, privacy-conscious folks) but they’re personal preference calls, not “essential” purchases the way a good case is.

What We’d Actually Bundle

If you’re setting a student up from scratch and want our honest priority order: protective case first, USB-C hub second if your laptop is slim, cooling pad third if you run anything demanding. Everything else is genuinely optional.

Ask us in-store and we’ll tell you honestly whether an accessory is worth it for your specific laptop and how you use it.
